Owlet Smart Sock Frequently Asked Questions

Every once in awhile, we get a question about Owlet that we’ve never seen before. We love that there are parents out there who are thinking of every possibility and every option. On the other hand, there are some questions we keep seeing pop up across social media very often. We recently asked our Facebook and Instagram followers to weigh in and share their top Owlet Smart Sock questions. As promised, here are the answers to many of your Owlet frequently asked questions.

Q: About how long does it take the Smart Sock 3 to charge?

A: The Owlet Smart Sock 3 has an 16-hour battery life and uses convenient drop-and-go charging for an 8-hour charge in just 20 minutes, and full 16-hour charge in only 90 minutes. The Sock takes about 90 minutes to charge, so you can typically achieve a full charge in between naps. Many Owlet parents make it a practice to plug the Sock in whenever it’s not in use. If your Owlet Smart Sock won’t charge please review our troubleshooting guides at our Help Center.

Q: Where can I find an Owlet battery replacement?

A: If used correctly, your Owlet Smart Sock will not require a battery replacement. Please contact our Customer Support team or review our Help Center for more information on replacement parts.

Q: Does the Sock adjust as the baby’s foot grows?

A: The Owlet Smart Sock 3 includes two fabric sock sizes, so you can just pop the Sock Sensor out of one fabric sock and into the next size up. Our fabric socks include flexible straps to let you adjust and secure the sock to Baby’s foot.

This guide helps explain how to get a good Sock fit and placement, which is crucial to getting proper readings and preventing false notifications.

Q: How do I clean my Owlet Smart Sock?

A: To make sure the Sock works properly, you should clean both the fabric sock and Sensor with a gentle detergent and a cool water. Yes, the electronics Smart Sock Sensor is designed to get wet. Review our in-depth cleaning guide here.

The Smart Sock is the first baby monitor to track your baby’s oxygen level and heart rate—the best indication of baby’s health—while they sleep.

Q: Can I adjust the notification parameters?

A: No, the notification zones are preset and cannot be changed. The Owlet Baby Monitor Notification strategy was set by a team of pulse oximetry specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists and pulmonologists. Babies’ heart rates can vary when they are very young, and the notifications are designed to hit the sweet spot to avoid false alarms.

Q: Is it possible to have a false notification for low heart rate?

A: Improper Sock fit can lead to false notifications. To ensure a proper Sock fit, check out our fit guide here.

Our blog post on the different types of Smart Sock notifications, what they mean, how they sound, and how to resolve them will help you better understand what impacts the Smart Sock notifications.

The Smart Sock 3 is designed to be used when Baby is sleeping, alone, in their own sleep space like a crib, or bassinet.

The most common false notifications are caused by:

  • Improper Sock fit
  • Baby feeding
  • Congestion or sickness
  • Baby holding their breath
  • Elevation
  • Cold feet

Read about about the causes of false notifications here.

Q: How do you turn off the Owlet Smart Sock?

A: There is no need to turn off the Smart Sock, but if you’d like to, for example if you’ll be traveling and want to save the Sock’s battery, follow these instructions.

Q: Is the Sock portable? Can send it to Grandma’s or babysitter’s house?

A: Yes, the Owlet Smart Sock is portable. The Base Station and Sock Sensor connect via Bluetooth, so even if Grandma doesn’t have WiFi, the monitor can still be used with the Base Station as the notification system. To connect the Base Station to Grandma’s WiFi so you can view live heart rate and oxygen level on the app, follow these instructions to add a new WiFi network.

Q: Does Owlet tell me when my baby wakes up?

A: Owlet is not designed to notify you if your baby wakes up in the middle of the night. Instead, it tracks your baby’s heart rate and oxygen and is designed to notify you if either falls out of preset zones. We focus on the most important information that you need to have peace of mind when you go to bed.

Looking for a way to check if your baby has woken up? Pair the Cam with your Smart Sock to get a more complete picture of your baby’s well-being with audio and HD video that streams right to your Owlet App!

Q: Can my baby still wear footie pajamas or does the foot need to be uncovered?

A: Yes, your baby can wear footie PJs (or even another sock) over the Smart Sock. It’s low profile so it can fit nicely under PJs.

Q: How does the payment plan option work?

A: Owlet has partnered with a company called Affirm to offer payment plans. Instead of paying the full amount upfront and at once, Affirm allows you to make payments (payment amounts, interest rates and terms vary by applicant). You do NOT have to wait to receive your Owlet Smart Sock until after your payments are finished. When you purchase and set up a payment plan with Affirm, your order will process and ship as if you paid in full. For more details and answers to even more Affirm FAQs, click here. To pay for your Owlet order with Affirm, select ‘Affirm’ at checkout.
