The perfect fashion book for Xmas teenage fashion fans has just been released – ‘Vogue Paris 100 years’ is a comprehensive look at the chic Parisian magazine with an in depth look at the different contributors and how they created the Vogue Paris style.
Now renamed Vogue France by Conde Nast the US owners, Vogue Paris had an independent view of its own from the American publishers and has often carved a controversial path with photography and artist profiles. This is the the first illustrated history of Vogue Paris from its debut edition in 1920 to its centenary in 2020.
It’s a look at the magazine as a historical document, the way we were and would be instructive for any fashion student brought up on social media as a longer in depth study. Also a history lesson which places the fashion in context of events in the larger world.
Work featured includes distinguished illustrators such as Lepape and photographers including Man Ray and Mario Testino, iconic faces like Catherine Deneuve and Audrey Hepburn and, of course, it showcases the fashion designers who defined the century – Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, McQueen, and many more.
Too often these days the past of the fashion world is selectively edited by social media and too many great photographers and designers are being forgotten in favour of those whose profile fleetingly fits a trend of the moment.
